WELCH
status_constructiontype_higher ed.role_sdContext: A college campus sought a building for a new identify on Discovery Walk. There was a preconceived aesthetic for the majority of existing buildings. At the intersection of Welch Road and Discovery Walk, a gateway was desired. This building would extend the existing campus West and was meant to stand out.
Design: Being a gateway building for the west campus expansion was a top priority. Discovery Walk, existing buildings on campus, and the angle of the site informed the building. We provided a curve at a prominent corner of campus. This was a balance with program, as a lab retains a module. Due to site constraints, the North West corner and South East corner were areas where we could manipulate the form of the building without effecting the lab requirements.
Responsibilities: Site analysis, context mapping, conceptual diagrams, sketching, programming, digital modeling, massing iteration, design iteration, physical models, fenestration studies, lab test fits, rendering, presentation packages.
